Academic Support Room Open to All Students!
The Academic Support Room (ASR), staffed by veteran teachers Nick Zachary and Eric Bone,
provides academic support for any and all students who seek assistance. Freshman, sophomores,
juniors, and seniors are all encouraged to make use of this resource. While classroom teachers
are often the best source of academic support, the ASR teachers may be available during times
when the classroom teacher is not, may be able to provide one-to-one help when the classroom
teacher cannot, or may simply be able to provide a fresh perspective. This academic support is
not limited to class assignments; for instance, seniors have often used the ASR to get feedback
on their college application essays or for help with their senior project papers. Other students
have used the ASR to review in preparation for standardized tests such as the SAT's, and a
number of students have used the ASR as a resource when working on independent studies.
While the Academic Support Room was originally conceived to provide assistance to
students who were not already receiving extra support, no student seeking help will be turned
away. The current staffing of the ASR with two part-time teachers has helped the program better
address the diverse needs of B.F.U.H.S. students, while keeping the resource available from 7:30
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on most school days. Mr. Zachary is available from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
each morning, offering help with math. Mr. Bone provides help with reading and writing
assignments every day except Tuesday, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students may sign up in
advance for assistance or simply walk in.

The Academic Support Room initiative began with a suggestion from the BFUHS school
board who wanted to provide opportunities for students to get help when they need it. The
program has been funded by the American Recovery and Rehabilitation Act for the 2009-2010
school year as well as the 2010-2011 school year. Funds were added into the school budget this
past year to continue offering this program beyond the federal grant funding. "We have a high
level of commitment to keeping this program on-going for students." said Christopher Hodsden,
principal of Bellows Falls Union High School.
